The Blues boss has regularly played down the west London side’s chances of lifting the English top-flight crown despite vying with Arsenal and Manchester for top spot for most of the season.
He has taken them forward and this is his first season
Mourinho’s men slipped to second in the table behind Liverpool last weekend following a surprise 1-0 loss to Crystal Palace at Selhurt Park in their London derby.
But Nevin feels the Portuguese has taken the Blues forward in the Champions League and Premier League as the 50-year-old continues to nurture his “little horses”.
“That small pitch and a team that was absolutely up for it and playing in a fearless manner, they had their best game of the season,” Nevin told Newstalk’s Off The Ball.
“Chelsea just couldn’t get their game going. They couldn’t get the ball moving. The tactics that they were playing against worked perfectly.
“For all the negatives, and we’ll read a million negative comments about Mourinho every single week, see the big picture; he has taken Chelsea from were they were last year to where they are this year.
“I would argue they are a better organised side. Not necessarily better to watch but they are in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
“They are in the top four and comfortably in it. That wasn’t the case last year. He has taken them forward and this is his first season.”
