Juan Mata has paid credit to David Moyes after the former Manchester United manager’s important role in the Spaniard’s move to Old Trafford.

The 51-year-old, who was sacked by the Red Devils last week, spent a club-record £42.5m to sign Mata from Premier League rivals Chelsea in January.

I do thank him for his continuous interest in me and his importance during my transfer to become a Manchester United player

Mata has already scored five goals and made four assists since moving to United, and the Spain international, who turned 26 on Monday, thanked Moyes.

“Obviously I don’t want to forget that, since the beginning of the week, David Moyes is no longer our manager,” Mata wrote in his blog, One Hour Behind.

“I wish him and his technical staff the best of luck in the future, and I do thank him for his continuous interest in me and his importance during my transfer to become a Manchester United player.”

Mata added that the United supporters deserved to see their side comfortably beat Norwich City 4-0 as Ryan Giggs took charge of his first Red Devils game.

“It was Ryan Giggs’ first game as a manager after plenty of years of success on the pitch, and the truth is everything went well,” Mata added.

“It was not easy, of course, but in the end we got a convincing 4-0. Our fans deserve that, indeed.

“They deserve scores like this one because, in this tough season, they have gone home with a downcasted face too many times.

“So that’s what we are going to try in the remaining games.”
