Brendan Rodgers promised Liverpool will dust themselves after Chelsea dealt the Reds’s title ambitions a blow with victory at Anfield.

The Reds struggled to break down a defensive-minded Chelsea side on Merseyside as Jose Mourinho fielded a weakened starting line-up.

And the visitors took the lead against the run of play after Steven Gerrard’s untimely slip allowed Demba Ba to run and finish past Simon Mignolet.

If we win our last two games we finish above them and then we’ll see what happens with Manchester City

Liverpool pressed for an equaliser in the second half as Joe Allen and Luis Suarez came close, but Chelsea wrapped up three points through Willian in injury time as the home side threw men forward.

The Reds remain two points ahead of Chelsea and six clear of Manchester City, however, the Citizens can leapfrog the 18-time English champions on goal difference if they win their games in hand.

“Unless you can score that early goal you can’t entice the opposition to come up,” Rodgers told Liverpool’s website.

“It was clear that they had not come here to win the game with the time-wasting and what not. The players gave everything, we just couldn’t get that wee bit of luck.

“I don’t think it’s a tactic to get players behind the ball. You could get anyone to get everyone back and defend on the edge of the box.

“We are still two points ahead of a team that has spent an absolute fortune. If we win our last two games we finish above them and then we’ll see what happens with Manchester City.

“The players have been brilliant, we dust ourselves off.”
