Steven Gerrard believes Liverpool have made their biggest statement of the title race after a close-fought win against rivals Manchester City.

Liverpool roared into a sixth-minute lead when Luis Suarez fed Raheem Sterling and the 19-year-old outwitted Vincent Kompany and Joe Hart before Martin Skrtel’s thunderous header put the Reds 2-0 up at Anfield.

We’ve shown that we’re going to go to the wire and all the way, nothing is won yet but that was probably the biggest statement we’ve made so far

However, City took 17 second-half minutes to restore parity thanks to David Silva’s close-range finish and a Glen Johnson own goal, leaving the visitors as favourites to go on and win.

But Citizens captain Kompany’s miscued clearance teed up Coutinho to drill home the loose ball and secure three points, with Jordan Henderson receiving a straight red in stoppage-time for a high challenge.

“It was emotional but we need to keep calm,” Gerrard told Sky Sports.

“We’ve got four big games to come but that meant so much, especially when they got back into the game. We feared the worst at that point.

“I think we’ve shown that we’re going to go to the wire and all the way, nothing is won yet but that was probably the biggest statement we’ve made so far.”

Gerrard continued: “That was the longest 90 minutes I’ve probably ever played in. I kept flashing back to how long the clock was taking in cup finals and big games that I’ve played in before.

“It felt like the clock was going backwards in that game. I’m a little bit lost for words at the moment. We’ve got four big cup finals left.”

Liverpool make the trip to relegation-threatened Norwich City next Sunday, and Gerrard urged the Reds not to get carried away.

“People said that was the biggest one but I think the biggest on is Norwich,” Gerrard added.

“The important thing now is not to get carried away with that result. We need to stay calm focused and worry about Norwich.”
