‘Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has been exceptional in new role’
Steven Gerrard has thrived in his new holding midfield role for Liverpool, according to Chris Kamara
Chris Kamara believes Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has shown exceptional form in his new holding-midfield role.
The 33-year-old was asked to fill the role by Brendan Rodgers, with defensive midfielder Lucas Leiva picking up a knee injury in a 2-2 draw with Aston Villa in January.
He has been such a fantastic player and it is the one trophy that he has always wanted but it has never really come his way
Although Gerrard initially struggled in his new position, the England skipper has been in good form as he attempts to steer Liverpool towards their first Premier League title.
“He will be happier with the form that he is showing,” Kamara told The Sport Review.
“When Brendan Rodgers first put him in that holding position, people were saying that’s not Steven Gerrard’s best position.
“He is a marauding swashbuckling midfield player who gets forward and scores goals and you’re taking so much away from him by asking him to sit in front of the back four.
“Brendan is more or less saying, ‘Trust me on this, playing you in that position will get the best out of you’.
“A few years ago when he was at his best in terms of mobility, he’d be playing Lucas behind Gerrard.
“Not only does he read the game brilliantly, he tackles well, he starts attacks and if ever a player was suited to a system, it has turned out that holding role for him has been exceptional.”
Kamara added that Gerrard deserves to win the Premier League title and emulate the Liverpool legends of the 1970s and 1980s.
“He has been such a fantastic player and it is the one trophy that he has always wanted but it has never really come his way,” Kamara added.
“He is in Liverpool’s greatest-ever XI but most of those other players in Liverpool’s best side have won the old First Division.
“Now Steven has won a Champions League the same as them but he wants a domestic league because that was something that Liverpool won on a regular basis.”
