Liverpool have achieved main target, declares Lucas Leiva

Lucas Leiva says the Reds have achieved their main target after sealing a return to Champions League group stage

Lucas Leiva has declared that Liverpool have achieved their main target for the season after booking their place in next season’s Champions League group stage.

The Reds moved five points clear at the top of the table and 10 points ahead of fourth-placed Arsenal after a 3-2 victory over Norwich City on Sunday.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has regularly reiterated that sealing a return to Europe’s premier club competition was a priority this season.

And Reds midfielder Lucas echoed the sentiments of his manager ahead of next weekend’s clash against Chelsea at Anfield.

“It’s fantastic,” Lucas told Liverpoolfc.com.

“I said last week, I have been here for seven years and this is probably the first time that we really feel we have a chance.

“The last few years have been so difficult for us and the fans as well. We still haven’t done the job, but one thing we have achieved is the Champions League – it was the main target for us at the beginning of the season – with no qualifiers, straight to the group stage.

“We will have more time in pre-season. One target is achieved, now we can carry on and think about the title.”
