Danny Welbeck shot straight at Manuel Neuer in the best chance of the first half at Old Trafford before Nemanja Vidic’s header gave the hosts the lead from a corner in the 58th minute.
We’ve given ourselves a great opportunity to go to Munich and try and get a victory
David Moyes
Bastian Schweinsteiger’s superb half-volley pulled the visitors level in the 66th minute, before the Germany international saw red for a second bookable offence late on.
And after a battling display, Moyes played up his chances of securing a spot in the semi-final draw ahead of next Wednesday’s return leg.
“The players played really well tonight so we’re delighted with the performance but just a bit disappointed that we conceded in the end,” Moyes said.
“I thought it was a really good performance, really gutsy. It was a great crowd here tonight, a great atmosphere.
“There was a real determination tonight to make sure we did well, it’s a competition we have a really good history in, and the players realised we were playing a really good side tonight.
“We know we’ve got to score a goal in the second leg. If the score stays the same, Bayern go through – we have to do something about it.
“We wanted a have a chance and we know we’ve given ourselves a great opportunity to go to Munich and try and get a victory.”
