Nemanja Vidic is convinced that Manchester United have what it takes to reach the Champions League last four after they held Bayern Munich in the first leg of their quarter-final.

Danny Welbeck shot straight at Manuel Neuer in the best chance of the first half at Old Trafford before Vidic’s header gave the hosts the lead in the 58th minute.

But Bastian Schweinsteiger’s brilliant half-volley pulled the visitors level in the 66th minute before the Germany international saw red for a second bookable offence late on.

And after a battling display, United captain Vidic believes that the Red Devils are capable of causing an upset and knocking out the holders in next Wednesday’s second leg.

“The return leg will be the same game,” Vidic told ITV. “They’re going to have a lot of possession, especially at their ground and we have to keep the shape and stick together. But with our players I think we can hurt them.”

The Serb continued: “It was a tough game. At 1-0 we just felt we were having good positions but we were punished for one mistake and they showed what a good team they are.

“They had a lot of possession tonight. We accepted that most of the game was going to be in our half but we tried go on the counter-attack.

“In the Champions League this season we’ve played quite well, just the Olympiacos game was disappointing. In all the other games we defended well and played as a team.”
