Ashley Young is a “major doubt” for Manchester United’s Champions League quarter-final second-leg at Bayern Munich on Wednesday.

The England international was forced off in the 17th minute after picking up a hand injury in United’s 4-0 victory over Newcastle United on Sunday.

A Red Devils statement read: “Ashley Young has been sent to hospital for treatment on a hand injury sustained during United’s 4-0 win over Newcastle at St James’ Park.

“The Reds winger made a bright start to the Barclays Premier League encounter but was forced to make a hasty exit for Adnan Januzaj in the 17th minute after appearing to dislocate his thumb following a collision with Magpies opponent Massadio Haidara.

“Young is now a major doubt for Wednesday’s Uefa Champions League quarter final second leg with Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena in Germany.”

United were handed a confidence boost ahead of their trip to Germany after Juan Mata’s brace and goals from Javier Hernandez and Young’s replacement Adnan Januzaj sealed a 4-0 win.
