Moyes, who signed a six-year deal last summer, was reported to be on the verge of the axe after the 20-time English champions suffered their 11th Premier League defeat of the season.
Former United defender Neville feels Moyes lost the belief and confidence of the players which ultimately cost the 50-year-old his job at Old Trafford.
“The players have to take massive responsibility. They are the one out on the football pitch,” Neville told Sky Sports News.
“Players have to take responsibility and accountability in football. But the fact of the matter is, you don’t go sacking 24 players.
“Those players there are not as bad as they’ve been showing. I’ve played with a lot of them players, great players for United. They love the clubs, the ones I know, and they’re desperate to do well for the club.
