Martin Keown: David Moyes didn’t know his best Man United side

Martin Keown says David Moyes paid the price for not knowing his best starting 11 at Manchester United

Martin Keown believes that David Moyes paid the price for not knowing his best starting 11 at Manchester United.

The Scot was sacked on Tuesday after just 10 months in charge of the Red Devils and with the club languishing in seventh place in the Premier League.

Moyes couldn’t crack the code and at times his system seemed old-fashioned

And former Arsenal defender Keown reckons that the 50-year-old was unable to “crack the code” after succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson last summer.

“When you start at a new club, you need to work out quickly who your best players are and then formulate a system that will suit them,” Keown told the Daily Mail.

“Moyes failed to do either, picking 51 different starting XIs in his 51 games in charge. Yes, Sir Alex Ferguson used to rotate his squad, too, but he knew who he could rely on in the big games.

“Moyes couldn’t crack the code and at times his system seemed old-fashioned. United weren’t great at the back under Ferguson but they could usually outscore opponents.”
