Nemanja Matic insisted that Chelsea gave “their best” but were unlucky against Sunderland as they slumped to a shock defeat at Stamford Bridge.

Goals from Connor Wickham and Fabio Borini overturned the lead the Blues had taken through Samuel Eto’o at Stamford Bridge as Jose Mourinho’s unbeaten home record in the Premier League came to an end.

We did give our best but we were unlucky and we lost because of that

The defeat severely dented Chelsea’s title hopes and handed leaders Liverpool the chance to pull five points clear of the Blues if they beat Norwich City.

And Matic insisted that he and his team-mates gave their all against the Black Cats.

“We are always focused. For us, the next game is the most important,” Matic said.

“Sunderland was the most important game, we spoke about that before it.

“This is football and sometimes you have to lose. We did give our best but we were unlucky and we lost because of that.”
