Real Madrid put on an impressive defensive display to beat Bayern Munich 1-0 and take a slender advantage heading into the return leg of their Champions League semi-final.

Karim Benzema scored against the run of play in the 19th minute as Madrid extended their unbeaten home record in the competition to 18 games.

Wednesday night’s showdown prompted plenty of activity on Twitter – and here are our favourite updates, in chronological order.

Former Real Madrid playmaker Mesut Özil (@MesutOzil1088) is looking forward to the game: “Another CL-night. Watching a lot of friends on TV. We have to play CL again next season. #championsleague #realmadrid”

Ex-Chelsea man Jody Morris (@morriskid) is impressed by the visitors’ approach: “Gotta rate Bayern..just rock up at the Bernabeu and plot right up in Madrids half!!”

Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (@Alex_OxChambo) is tipping the Bundesliga side to win: “I’ve seen the first 5 mins of the game and I’m going for Bayern tonight! But then again, Ronaldo is on the pitch….”

Rugby star Danny Cipriani (@DannyCipriani87) praises the home side as Benzema scores the opener: “Fair play Real… Soaking up pressure then scoring when it counts!!”

Scotland international Ross McCormack (@Rossmccormack44) chimes in: “If ever there is proof that possession means nothing then there it is!!”

England Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) makes a bet that he will later come to regret… “If this finishes 1-0 I’ll get my ears pinned back.”

England cricketer Jonathan Bairstow (@jbairstow21) takes the time to make note of referee Howard Webb’s boots: “Howard Webb and his Adidas World Cups! #oldschool #bestbootsever”

Arsenal legend Ray Parlour (@RealRomfordPele) laughs off Thomas Mueller’s late penalty appeal: “Never been a penalty. #muller”

And after the final whistle, Lineker (@GaryLineker) prepares to go under the knife: “My big mouth has done for my big ears! In the post match interviews can someone ask Gareth Bale for the number of his ear surgeon?”

Ex-Stoke City man Danny Higginbotham (@Higginbotham05) feels Madrid were worthy winners: “The sooner people get rid of that possession stat the better. All well and good having all the ball but you have to do something with it.”

And finally, ex-Netherlands international Mario Melchiot (@MarioMelchiot) praises Zinedine Zidane for Real’s winner: “#RMDBAY Zidane’s magic is working well on #Benzema His goal helped @realmadrid to their victory! #mmlove #UCL”
