Pellegrini gives latest Man City injury update ahead of Southampton clash
Manuel Pellegrini reveals that Sergio Agüero will not be fit for Manchester City's clash with Southampton on Saturday
Sergio Aguero will not be available for Manchester City’s clash with Southampton on Saturday, Manuel Pellegrini has revealed.
The Argentina international, who has already spent two lengthy spells on the sidelines this season, has not featured since the 2-1 Champions League defeat by Barcelona last month due to a hamstring injury.
He needs more work to become 100 per cent fit but he will be fine for next weekend
However, Pellegrini is hopeful that the forward will be available for the crunch clash against Liverpool at Anfield a week on Sunday.
“It is too soon for Sergio,” said Pellegrini. “He has trained for only two days and needs more time. Perhaps one week more and he should be fine for the game against Liverpool.
“We hope he will return and play an important role in our remaining matches but this match has come too soon for him. He needs more work to become 100 per cent fit but he will be fine for next weekend.”
Pellegrini added: “Matija Nastasic continues to work with the physios as he recovers and Micah Richards is in the squad for the game against Southampton.”
City are currently third in the Premier League and four points behind leaders Liverpool with a game in hand heading into the clash against the Saints at Etihad Stadium.
“Southampton are a very good team who are playing without pressure who are very comfortable in the table,” said Pellegrini.
“They cannot be relegated and they can’t qualify for Europe so they are playing with freedom and we are absolutely sure we will have a hard game on Saturday.”
