Manuel Pellegrini has explained David Silva’s absence for Manchester City’s 2-2 draw with Sunderland on Wednesday.

The Spaniard was heavily influential in City’s second-half comeback at Anfield as the Citizens midfielder scored in a 3-2 loss to Liverpool last Sunday.

And Pellegrini revealed that the former Valencia midfielder is suffering from an ankle injury which has hampered the Spain international in his last two games.

“David Silva has a problem with his ankle which he has had for the past two games,” Pellegrini said.

“He couldn’t play today following the game on Sunday with only four days to recover. We will see how he is for Monday’s game.”

Pellegrini played down concerns over Vincent Kompany’s fitness after the Belgian was passed fit hours before the Liverpool loss and featured against the Black Cats.

“I don’t think there was any problem with Kompany physically today,” Pellegrini continued.

The City manager conceded the Citizens were very tired following the loss to their title rivals on Sunday.

“My players are more mentally tired than physically tired. Playing this game after Liverpool was very difficult,” he added.

“I think that we had some low performances in February but we recovered. I think it’s normal for a team to have lesser performances at some points of the season.”
