Real Madrid

Iker Casillas Wasn’t fully called into action until 10 minutes into the second-half, but even then, things were easy for him as he parried Ribery’s cross. Cleared well when Bayern’s balls into the six-yard box were causing trouble. Great save from Gotze in the 84th minute when he had little or nothing to do all night. 6

Daniel Carvajal Had his hands full with Ribery and Alaba running down his wing all night, but played well in adversity. Restricted Ribery to the point of the Frenchman being taken off. 7

Fábio Coentrao Provided a fabulous assist for Benzema to leave him with the easiest of finishes for the opening goal. 7

Sergio Ramos Was the other centre-half playing out there as his partner sought most of the attention. Did do well when needed. 6

Pepe Put the shackles on Mandzukic all night. Was the catalyst to Madrid’s goal when his block in the 18th minute from Kroos prompted their successful counter-attacking move. Duly stopped the game before half-time with some of his famous play-acting. 6

Luka Modric Forced to work harder than he would have liked in defence which forced his handed creatively but played an important role. 7

Angel Di María Shot straight at Neuer when he had the chance to offload to Ronaldo in the 23rd minute. Blazed over in the 40th minute when it was easier to score. Should have played in Isco before half-time when the latter the Spaniard was clear through on goal. 6

Xabi Alonso (Man-of-the-match) Made a good block to deny Robben when his shot was goal-bound in the 38th minute. Another great header on the hour to clear a dangerous Bayern cross. Showed his work-rate defensively as he frustrated the opposition breaking up their play late-on. Got there in the nick of time to deny Mueller a clear chance. 8

Isco His crosses were from the top drawer all night, giving Di Maria a guilt edged opportunity. And were it not for the selfishness he could his name on the score sheet. Got yellow for a deliberate handball after 56 minutes and was lucky not to get sent off two minutes later. 6

Cristiano Ronaldo With his fitness in question prior to the game, he was looking to score in his ninth successive Champion League appearence. He headed straight at Neuer after the first goal for Real. Then he missed an absolute sitter after 25 minutes when he had the goal at his mercy. Looked sharp when getting on the ball in the 47th minute and forcing a great save from Neuer. Showed how he can hit a shot from anywhere forcing another save from the opposition keeper in the 69th minute. 7

Karim Benzema Was in the right place at the right time in the 18th minute when he finished off a Coentrao cross to make it 1-0 after a great counter-attack. 7

Substitutes

Raphael Varane Came on for the unfortunate Pepe in the 73rd minute. Made an important intervention when Mueller’s shot could have hit the target. 6

Gareth Bale Ronaldo was sacrificed when Isco was surely the better option to leave the field in the 73rd minute. Looked very lively when introduced and ended up firing into the side netting while also forcing Dante into a clearance. 6

Asier Illarramendi The defensive-midfielder replaced Isco rather belatedly in the 81st minute. n/a

Manuel Neuer Played through the pain with a calf injury he looked shaky when pressure was applied and often pressed the panic button. Made a great save from Ronaldo two minutes after the half-time break when the shot looked destined for the bottom corner. Got down well to deny what initially looked like a speculative effort from Ronaldo. 6

Rafinha Snapping at Ronaldo’s heels from the off, he spent lots of time in attack but couldn’t find that perfect pass. Replaced by Martinez with 24 minutes left. 6

David Alaba A constant threat down the left but his energy went unrewarded as the accuracy wasn’t there in his crosses. Showed his speed to outpace the lively Di Maria when the Argentine would have been away. 7

Jerome Boateng Done the needful when he blocked a Ronaldo effort that looked dangerous on half-time. 6

Dante As usual played a very advanced role spending most of the game in the Real half of the pitch. Made an important clearance of a Bale cross late in the game. 6

Arjen Robben The former Real Madrid player almost scored in the 13th minute when he showed quick feet to leave the two centre-halves for dead. Had a good chance after 61 minutes when Bayern broke but he got caught in two minds and shot straight at Casillas. Showed persistence to follow up a lost cause and play Gotze in. 7

Philipp Lahm Another workmanlike performance, with a sprinkling of class. Nearly evaded the cover to get on the end of a Rafinha pass and finish. 7

Toni Kroos Seemed to always be involved in the game and could have scored right before Madrid’s first with a shot straight at Pepe. 7

Bastian Schweinsteiger Linked well in midfield with Kroos and Lahm. His header from a corner was the first attempt on target for Bayern but was easily saved. 6

Franck Ribéry Did little all night and was replaced for Gotze who contributed more in the final 20 minutes than the French international could in the opening hour. 5

Mario Mandzukic Played out wide instead of through the middle where he was needed and was well marshalled. 6

Substitutes

Javi Martinez The Spain international came on rather surprisingly when Bayern were chasing the game, replacing Rafinha in the 66th minute. 6

Mario Gotze Came on for Ribery in the 71st minute. Could have got the vital away goal with six minutes left when Robben played him in. 6

Thomas Mueller Replaced Schweinsteiger during the barrage of substitutions in the 73rd minute. His deflected effort with ten minutes to go could have caused trouble. Felt he had a certain penalty in the 92nd minute. 6
