Sam Allardyce wants ‘surprise package’ Liverpool to win title
West Ham United manager Sam Allardyce picks Brendan Rodgers and Luis Suárez as his manager and player of the season
Sam Allardyce says he wants to see the Premier League’s “surprise package” Liverpool win the title this season.
The Reds have a two point lead at the top of the table ahead of their trip to West Ham United on Sunday.
With Chelsea and Manchester City playing on Saturday, Brendan Rodgers’s side will know what is required to cement their title credentials in east London.
And Allardyce, whose side “effectively” secured their top-flight status with a 2-1 win at Sunderland on Monday, reckons the Reds would be disappointed to finish second after leading with six games to go.
“Liverpool are in with a definite shout of the title and I would like to see them do it because they have been the surprise package this season,” Allardyce wrote in his Evening Standard column.
“They’ve taken full advantage of not being involved in European competition and in Brendan and Luis, they have outstanding candidates for manager and player of the year respectively.
“The secret now is to finish it off and they have a great opportunity. For me, and because of the position they’re in, there will be scant consolation for Liverpool if they finish second, particularly as they have to play Manchester City and Chelsea yet.”
