Simon Mignolet underlines Martin Skrtel’s value to Liverpool
Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet heaps praise on Reds centre-half Martin Skrtel ahead of their West Ham trip
Simon Mignolet has underlined Martin Skrtel’s importance to Liverpool ahead of their trip to West Ham United.
The Slovakia international appeared to be heading towards the Anfield exit door after falling down the pecking order behind Daniel Agger and Jamie Carragher last season.
Martin is a very experienced defender who has played a lot of seasons and knows what his job is
However, the 28-year-old remained at the Reds, establishing himself as a first-team regular throughout the season and helping Liverpool challenge for the title.
Skrtel has even discovered his goal-scoring touch, netting a staggering six goals in 32 Premier League appearances.
And Mignolet, who joined Liverpool from Sunderland in a £9m deal last summer, feels Skrtel gives the Reds an added threat from set-pieces.
“Martin has shown the whole season he is there; not only defending really well, but also scoring a few goals,” Mignolet told Liverpool’s website.
“It is always important as a central defender to get your head on a few set-pieces, and with the delivery we’ve got he is always a threat, which can give us the edge in some games.”
Mignolet added: “Martin is so strong and if he goes and attacks the ball with his head, he clears it.
“Also, one versus one against any striker, he is very strong and doesn’t get in any bother. Playing out [from the back] as well.
