Tottenham boss Sherwood won’t pick Paulinho on price tag or reputation
Tottenham Hotspur manager Tim Sherwood challenges Paulinho to earn his first-team place after falling out of favour
Tim Sherwood has warned Paulinho that the Tottenham Hotspur manager will pick players on merit and not based on their price tag or reputation.
The Brazil international hasn’t started a Premier League game for the north London side since a 1-0 victory over Cardiff City at White Hart Lane on 2 March.
The 25-year-old has grown increasingly frustrated with his current situation at Spurs with this summer’s World Cup looming on the horizon, admitting he isn’t comfortable at the club earlier this week.
He won’t find any Premier League team similar to what he has been used to. But he trains well and wants to be a success
However, Sherwood called on Andre Villas-Boas’s £17m signing to continue to work hard in first-team training as the South American adjusts to the Premier League.
“I pick players on what they are doing in training, not on reputations and price tags,” Sherwood said.
“I can’t be worrying if the Brazil national manager wants him to play every week. I am going to do what is best for Tottenham, not any national manager.
“He knows if he trains well and plays well, he stays in the side. He’s come here from another country and the language has been a problem for him.
“Also settling into the Premier League, it’s a different game from what he has been used to.
“It’s very fast with no respite and we play a completely different way to the Brazil team and the team he has come from.
“He won’t find any Premier League team similar to what he has been used to. But he trains well and wants to be a success.”
