Robbie Fowler believes that Robin van Persie’s spell on the sidelines has allowed Wayne Rooney to find his best form at Manchester United.

The Netherlands international is currently out of action with a knee injury picked up last month during the Champions League win over Olympiacos.

It wouldn’t surprise me if Van Persie left in the summer

And former Liverpool striker Fowler claims that the striker’s enforced absence has helped Rooney hit top gear for the Red Devils.

“When Rooney and Van Persie were playing together it was a bit of a mix-match. They weren’t getting results,” Fowler told talkSPORT.

“Since Van Persie has been injured and out of the side, Rooney seems to have upped his game.

“I really rate Rooney and think he could play as a lone striker, he can play with anyone. He can play a multitude of roles.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if Van Persie left in the summer.”

Van Persie, 30, has scored 11 goals and made three assists in 18 Premier League games this season.
