Wayne Rooney felt that Manchester United were the architects of their own downfall as they slumped to defeat at Everton on Sunday.

Leighton Baines set the Toffees on their way to a 2-0 win at Goodison Park with a penalty and Kevin Mirallas added a second before half-time to ensure it was a miserable return to Merseyside for David Moyes.

The defeat – the Red Devils’ 11th of the season – ended United’s faint hopes of Champions League qualification and piled further pressure on new boss Moyes.

But Rooney felt that “sloppy” defending was the main difference between the two teams on Merseyside.

“Everyone knows that it’s a difficult place to come and Everton made it difficult for us by putting bodies behind the ball,” Rooney told MUTV.

“But we conceded two really sloppy goals which we need to cut out because we’re making it hard for ourselves to get back into games.

“Obviously, once they got the first goal we knew it would be tough and the second goal was a big blow.

“It’s not nice when you concede just before half time at a place like this. Everton are in good form and they’ve got a lot of confidence so we knew it would be hard.”
