Wayne Rooney insists that Manchester United will do all they can to win the Europa League if they qualify for next season’s tournament.

The Red Devils are currently seventh in the Premier League table and 10 points behind fourth-placed Arsenal heading into their final five games of the season.

The Europa League is a difficult tournament [to win] so if we qualify for it we’ll have to make sure we’re ready

With David Moyes’ side looking set to miss out on Champions League qualification for the first time since 1996, United may have to settle for a spot in Europe’s second tier club competition.

But Rooney insists that playing European football next season is important for the club.

“You want to be playing in the Champions League but it’s important to finish as high up the table as you can and, if that means playing in the Europa League, then so be it,” Rooney told MUTV.

“It’s a difficult tournament [to win] so if we qualify for it we’ll have to make sure we’re ready for that.”
