Pepe Mel declared that West Bromwich Albion are ready to stay in the Premier League after a close-fought victory over West Ham United.

The Baggies made the breakthrough when outspoken striker Saido Berahino scored in the 10th minute after a positive start from the Hammers at the Hawthorns.

The players have learned lessons from Cardiff & Spurs games and I think they’re ready to stay in the league

Berahino and Stephane Sessegnon had chances to extend the home side’s lead but Mel’s men held on to secure three points against their fellow relegation rivals.

West Brom are a point behind the Hammers after their win, and the Baggies manager lavished praise on his players as they took a big step towards Premier League safety.

“I am extremely proud of the players. They worked very hard to achieve this win. The atmosphere the fans generated really helped us,” Mel said.

“The fans have shown since I arrived they are best in league. I have to thank them because they really did help us get over line today.

“The players have learned lessons from Cardiff & Spurs games and I think they’re ready to stay in the league. We still need more points.”

West Brom are five points clear of the relegation zone.
