Arsenal tried to sign Eden Hazard, reveals Arsene Wenger
Arsene Wenger says Arsenal were close to signing Eden Hazard before the Belgian moved to Chelsea
Arsene Wenger has revealed that Arsenal failed in an attempt to sign Eden Hazard before Chelsea snapped up the Belgian playmaker.
The Gunners boss says that he spoke to the newly-crowned PFA young player of the year’s agent about the possibility of signing the midfielder from Ligue 1 side Lille.
I had his agent at my home but again the barrier was financial
But Chelsea’s financial power allowed the Blues to be successful in prising the 23-year-old away from France back in the summer of 2012.
“Yes, I wanted to take him,” Wenger told BeIN Sports. “I had his agent at my home but again the barrier was financial and Chelsea made an effort that I couldn’t make.
“He can be one of the players who grows into the Messi, Ronaldo stature if he continues to develop well.”
Wenger also revealed that he would be open to taking charge of a German club should he continue coaching when he leaves Arsenal.
“If I was to go somewhere then I think it would be in a different country because I am so much Arsenal that I would not like to coach anywhere else in England,” he continued.
“Germany [is an option] because I am of German culture a little bit and it’s a country where I have never worked and I am very close to it.”
