Arsene Wenger has heaped praise on the “exceptional” Mesut Ozil and is backing the playmaker to shine for Arsenal next season.

Ozil was one of the Gunners’ standout performers in the early stages of the campaign following his club-record £37.5m transfer to Emirates Stadium from Real Madrid in the summer.

But the 25-year-old suffered a dip in form after the turn of the year and spent six weeks on the sidelines with a hamstring injury.

However, Wenger is sure that Arsenal fans will see the best of the Germany international next term, when he will have fully adapted to the rigours of the Premier League.

“He’s an exceptional football player who has gone through a little period where he was injured for six weeks,” said Wenger.

“Just before that you could see the physical aspect of the league had got to him and certainly he was a bit jaded physically.

“It’s been an adaptation period but overall he’s a fantastic player and I’m sure he will have an even bigger impact next season.

“The team needs the stability of knowing each other from year to year. It makes the understanding stronger and next year I think he will fit in the team much quicker.”
