British triathletes miss the medals in Yokohama

Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee finish fourth and fifth, while Jodie Stimpson comes ninth in World Triathlon Series in Yokohama

It was a tough day for British triathletes who took five top ten finishes but missed out on any medal places at the third round of the World Triathlon Series in Yokohama, Japan.

Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee crossed over fourth and fifth, while Jodie Stimpson finished in ninth after picking up a foot injury during the race.

Defending champion Javier Gomez took the men’s top spot and the USA’s Gwen Jorgensen took gold for the women.

Britain’s Aaron Harris secured his second top-ten finish with sixth, and Adam Bowden ended in ninth, while 19-year-old Grant Sheldon finished 13th despite a 15-second penalty.

Alistair Brownlee, who was returning to the World Series after being sidelined from injury, admitted he struggled with the pace of the run.

“It’s the first race back,” said the London 2012 gold medallist. “I’ve done a lot of training and I didn’t feel like I had my race legs on. The harder I worked the worse it got.”

Stimpson, who won the first two rounds in Aukland and Cape Town, was hampered after cutting her foot during the second transition and needed five stitches after the race.

British Triathlon Performance Director Brendan Purcell said: “It’s a credit that she was able to finish given the injury. There are things she can learn but most of all she’s frustrated with it.”
