Chelsea transfers: Diego Simeone quiet on Thibaut Courtois future
Chelsea transfers: Diego Simeone refuses to comment on Thibaut Courtois' future beyond the summer
Diego Simeone refused to be drawn on Thibaut Courtois’ future beyond the summer after the goalkeeper helped Atletico Madrid knock Chelsea out of the Champions League.
The 21-year-old shot-stopper lined up against his parent club on Wednesday as Atletico sealed a 3-1 second-leg win at Stamford Bridge to book their place in the final.
Courtois is coming to the end of an impressive third loan spell at the Spanish club after having joined Chelsea from Genk in a £7m deal back in 2011.
The directors of the club will decide what’s best for this young player
And Simeone insisted that the future of the Belgium international will be decided by both clubs in the coming weeks.
“Right now I’m just trying to relish this moment,” said Simeone at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.
“I’m sure that in the future the directors of the club will decide what’s best for this young player and if he stays at Atletico or not.”
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho insisted that he was not upset to see a Chelsea loanee sparkle against his former club.
“I’m not particularly frustrated,” Mourinho said. “He’s the Atletico goalkeeper playing for Atletico, and he did his job.”
Meanwhile, Chelsea goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer was hugely impressed by his counterpart’s display in west London.
“I thought he was outstanding. He had a great game tonight,” said Schwarzer.
“If we’d been a bit lucky and he’d been a bit unlucky we could have got back in the game and there could have been a few more nervy moments towards the end for them. It wasn’t the case.”
