Vincent Kompany praised Manchester City’s resilience after helping his side beat Everton to move a step closer towards the Premier League title.

Edin Dzeko scored either side of half-time at Goodison Park to secure the points for City, who are now effectively two wins away from the title.

If we can carry on like this in the next two games, hopefully we should have enough

Sergio Aguero had earlier equalised Everton midfielder Ross Barkley’s spectacular opener in the 22nd minute.

Romelu Lukaku pulled a goal back for Everton in the 65th minute but City held on to win.

“It was very hard and very intense,” Kompany told Sky Sports. “I was thinking during the game that the Everton players have a lot of friends at Liverpool. It was tough but ultimately we got a great result.

“Goodison Park is one of those places where even when you take the lead it’s never finished – they always find a way to make it difficult and to score a goal that puts them back in the game. Until the last minute, both teams gave everything.

“We’ve had a lot of tough times during the season but a lot of wonderful games too. The most important thing is to pick up form at the right time.

“If we can carry on like this in the next two games, hopefully we should have enough. But I guess the past tells us that we have to be careful.”
