Everton won’t be thinking about Liverpool’s title bid, insists Rob Jones
EXCLUSIVE: Former Liverpool star Rob Jones insists the Everton players will be thinking about a top-four finish against Man City
Everton won’t be thinking about Liverpool when the Toffees take on Manchester City on Saturday, according to Rob Jones.
Roberto Martinez’s men have the chance to do their derby rivals a favour by beating the Citizens, who can leapfrog the Reds and claim the title on goal difference by winning their remaining games.
On Thursday, the Everton manager rubbished any suggestion that the blue half of Merseyside would take their foot off the pedal to prevent Liverpool from reclaiming control of the title race.
They won’t have Liverpool in their minds but if they do us a favour, great! I know I’ll be supporting Everton, I’ll get my Everton flag out from somewhere
And former Liverpool defender Jones expects Everton to give 100 per cent against Manuel Pellegrini’s men as the Toffees attempt to keep their slim hopes of a top-four finish alive at Goodison Park.
“You can forget the Everton fans, they can think what they want!” Jones told The Sport Review.
“But the players are professional players and there is no way that they’ll be going out there thinking, ‘let’s lose this game so Liverpool can’t win the Premier League’. It is laughable.”
He continued: “They will want to win for Everton and not for anyone else.
“They won’t have Liverpool in their minds but if they do us a favour, great! I know I’ll be supporting Everton, I’ll get my Everton flag out from somewhere!
“Everybody is fighting for points and the title face and top-four race is still wide open.”
Jones, who won the FA Cup and League Cup during his Liverpool career, is tipping Everton to cause an upset against City as the Citizens attempt to end a four-game losing run at Goodison Park.
“I think Manchester City will. I think they’ll get a draw at Everton,” Jones added.
“It is still wide open and it is so hard to predict the way it will go. This is what I like, it is close.”
Rob Jones was widely regarded as one of England’s finest full-backs before his career was cut short due to injury. Check out the Liverpool legend’s story at www.robjonesbook.co.uk
