Rob Jones believes Manchester United interim manager Ryan Giggs should be given the job on a permanent basis.

The 40-year-old winger led the Red Devils to a 4-0 victory over Norwich City last weekend in his first game in charge of the 20-time English champions after replacing David Moyes.

Giggs is facing tough competition for the position, though, with Netherlands head coach Louis van Gaal the overwhelming favourite to fill the void left by the Scot last month.

It isn’t in his hands but it would be good to see a British manager given a chance

However, former Liverpool defender Jones, who Giggs described as one of the most formidable opponents of his career, deserves a chance after putting smiles back on the faces of the United squad.

“He has been a brilliant servant to Manchester United. He knows Manchester United inside out,” Jones told The Sport Review. “I don’t think the club will give it to him because they want experience.

“I’d like to see him get the job. You could see when he took over that the buzz around the club is back since Moyes has left.

“That’s the thing, you’ve got to have a bit of fun in training. Apparently Giggs has brought that back in training. That’s part of football.

“It isn’t about making training boring for the lads, you have to make it exciting.”

He added: “It will be very interesting. They’ve got three games left and he will want to do as well as he can. It isn’t in his hands but it would be good to see a British manager given a chance.”

Rob Jones was widely regarded as one of England’s finest full-backs before his career was cut short due to injury. Check out the Liverpool legend’s story at www.robjonesbook.co.uk
