Wayne Rooney and Phil Jones have been ruled out of Manchester United’s trip to Southampton on Sunday – but the England pair should be fit for the World Cup, Ryan Giggs has revealed.

Rooney, 28, has been struggling with a groin injury, while defender Jones, 22, was forced off with a shoulder injury during the 3-1 win over Hull in midweek.

Both players are out of Sunday’s Premier League finale but interim boss Giggs is confident that the Three Lions duo will be fit and ready to travel to Brazil.

“Phil’s injury isn’t as bad as I thought on the night,” said Giggs. “He is obviously out for Sunday but should be OK for the World Cup.

“Wayne has just started training over the last couple of days, and Sunday is probably a little bit too quick for him, but he is training and will also be fine for the World Cup.”

Meanwhile, Giggs insisted that there is no pressure on him to guide Manchester United into the Europa League.

The Red Devils will finish sixth on goal difference if they beat Southampton and Tottenham lose at home to Aston Villa on Sunday.

“There is not really a lot of pressure on me at the moment because it is just four games and we can’t really win anything,” he said.

“We can only qualify for the Europa League and we will carry on trying to do that.

“You get a little taste of the pressure you are put under with regards to picking teams and wanting to do your best.”
