Roberto Martinez reflected on a “remarkable” season after Everton beat Hull City to finish with their best points tally for 27 years.

James McCarthy fired the visitors ahead with his first goal for the club in the ninth minute, before Romelu Lukaku slotted home from close range in his final loan appearance for the Toffees.

And after seeing his side secure their place in next season’s Europa League with a fifth-place finish, Martinez deflected the praise onto his players after a positive first season at Goodison Park.

“It’s been a demanding campaign but the players maintained their standards. The team made sure we finished strongly with 15 clean sheets and 72 points.

“It’s been a remarkable season, and it’s been really exciting seeing young players growing. The Europa League is the step we need to see how far we can go as a football club.”

Martinez added: “Today, Ross Barkley and John Stones just needed a rest.”
