Robbie Fowler doesn’t believe Liverpool are one-season wonders and is backing the Reds to challenge for silverware over the next few years.

Liverpool are two points clear at the top of the Premier League table with two games remaining, and the Reds have already sealed their place in the Champions League group stage next season.

He has given the players so much belief. I believe this is the start of something special

Manchester City can pip Rodgers’s side to the top-flight crown if the Citizens win their remaining games on goal difference, although Manuel Pellegrini’s men make the daunting trip to Everton on Saturday.

And Liverpool legend Fowler, who scored 183 goals in all competitions during his Reds career, reckons manager Rodgers is the best thing to happen to the club for “years and years”.

“If people think Liverpool are a one-season wonder, you’re doing the team a discredit, the manager a massive discredit,” Fowler told Newstalk.

“Rodgers is the best thing that has happened to Liverpool for years and years. He has everything in the lock. He won’t allow Liverpool to be one season wonders.

“He has given the players so much belief. I believe this is the start of something special.”

Former Liverpool midfielder Jason McAteer added that the Reds have exceeded expectations after securing a top-four finish was the key objective for the season.

“Going for the title this year was beyond our expectations,” McAteer added.

“The level was set at Champions League football – that was the challenge. Bring more players in. But we’ve put ourselves in a fantastic situation.

“Don’t get me wrong, everything has gone for Liverpool this season. We’ve got to the back end of the season but Chelsea was always going to be the hard game, a twist was going to happen.

“Sport just doesn’t go where you think it is going to happen. Things don’t go to plan.”
