Liverpool’s Brendan Rodgers: I sent my congratulations to Jose Mourinho
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers reveals he sent a message to Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho after rewatching the 2-0 loss - twice
Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that he sent Jose Mourinho his congratulations after analysing Chelsea’s win at Liverpool last weekend.
The Reds manager, whose side remain top of the Premier League, was critical of Chelsea’s defensive approach in the immediate aftermath of their 2-0 loss to the west London side.
Obviously I analysed the game, watched it twice and offered congratulations to a friend
Rodgers, who worked under Mourinho during the Portuguese’s first reign at Stamford Bridge, claimed that Chelsea parked “two buses” at Anfield as the Blues handed control of the Premier League title race to Manchester City.
Mourinho revealed that Rodgers had sent a text message ahead of their Champions League semi-final on Chelsea, and the Liverpool manager lifted the lid on his decision to offer his congratulations to his “friend”.
“I just congratulated Jose. He is a friend of mine and he got a good victory last weekend,” Rodgers told his pre-match media conference.
“Obviously I analysed the game, watched it twice and offered congratulations to a friend.”
Rodgers added that he is still optimistic that there could be another twist in the Premier League title race ahead of City’s clash against Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday.
Asked if there could be another surprise, Rodgers replied: “I believe so.
“This week has been a week to put everything into perspective. We’re two points clear with two games to go. It is a wonderful position to be in.
“Manchester City have a really tough game at Everton. Make no mistake, Everton in their own right are a great club. They’ve done really well this year, particularly at home, and they’re fighting for a Champions League.
“If we win our final two games, we’ll see where it takes us.”
