Garry Monk bemoaned his side’s “poor” defending after Swansea City slumped to defeat by Southampton in their final home game of the season.

Rickie Lambert struck the winner in the 90th minute at the Liberty Stadium after a largely uninspiring affair in South Wales.

It’s a poor goal and we’ve done that too many times and it’s cost us

The result lifted Southampton up to eighth place in the Premier League, as the Swans dropped into 13th in the table.

“We found it difficult to start off with against a very good side,” said Monk.

“We had three or four really good chances that we should have scored. It’s just a disappointment at the end. It’s a poor goal and we’ve done that too many times and it’s cost us.”

Asked about his future at the club, Monk added: “I think the chairman stated it would be decided before the end the season so I imagine at some point before the end of the week an announcement would be made.”
