Tim Sherwood may have cherry picked his Tottenham Hotspur successor after the under-fire manager allowed a Spurs fan to manage the side for the closing minutes of a 3-0 win against Aston Villa.

With the north London side coasting to victory after goals from Paulinho, Emmanuel Adebayor and a Nathan Baker own goal, Sherwood called down the supporter from the White Hart Lane stands.

The 45-year-old handed the Spurs fan his trademark gilet before the beaming supporter took up his place on the bench next to coach Les Ferdinand.

“This guy sits up there every week, shouting ‘Get him off Tim, get him on Tim’. He is the proper manager, so it was his chance to have a go,” Sherwood told BBC Sport.

“He’s nicked my gilet too! Football is all about the fans. It’s only friendly banter and we should have more in the game.”

Sherwood has been forced to contend with relentless speculation surrounding his future in recent weeks as Ajax manager Frank de Boer confirmed that Spurs had been in touch.

On Friday, the former Blackburn Rovers captain revealed that his players have told him that he will be sacked less than six months into the 18 month deal that he signed in December.
