West Ham 2 Tottenham 0: Andy Carroll defends ‘great’ Sam Allardyce
West Ham 2 Tottenham 0: Andy Carroll hails Sam Allardyce as a "great manager" after a comfortable win
Andy Carroll insisted under-fire Sam Allardyce is a great manager after West Ham United were comfortable winners against London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
Spurs were reduced to 10 men after Younes Kaboul hauled down Stewart Downing in the 24th minute, with Carroll drawing a full-stretch save from Hugo Lloris from the ensuing free-kick.
Sam Allardyce is a great manager. He has trusted me and played me when I’ve not been 100% fit
However, the Spurs goalkeeper was powerless moments later after Carroll’s header was deflected past the France international by striker Harry Kane.
The Hammers wrapped up three points before half-time when Stewart Downing’s free-kick found a hole in an abysmal Spurs wall to help West Ham move onto 40 points.
A growing number of West Ham supporters have called for Allardyce to be sacked in recent weeks despite achieving safety, and Carroll backed his manager.
“I’ve had a tough season getting fit and staying fit but I am feeling strong now,” Carroll told BT Sport.
The Hammers striker aded: “Sam Allardyce is a great manager. He has trusted me and played me when I’ve not been 100% fit.
“He has a lot of faith in me, I respect that and have to give it my all when I go out on to the pitch. His man-management of me has been great.”
