Ander Herrera: I wasn’t worried my Man United chance had gone

Manchester United signing Ander Herrera insists he was never worried his chance to move to Old Trafford had gone

Ander Herrera insists he wasn’t worried that his chance to join Manchester United had gone after missing out on a move last summer.

The Spain Under-23 international penned a five-year deal with the Red Devils on Thursday after United agreed a reported £31m fee with Athletic Bilbao.

Former Red Devils boss David Moyes made Herrera one of his top summer targets last summer, but the 13-time Premier League champions failed to agree a deal.

Asked if he felt his chance to join one of the world’s biggest clubs had evaporated, Herrera replied: “No [I didn’t think my chance had gone]. I only thought about Athletic and playing football and going playing.”

Herrera paid tribute to his former club Athletic following his switch, having scored five goals and made five assists in La Liga last season.

“It is a great club. It is a family club but I think this change is unique and I wanted to carry on my progression,” Herrera added.

The 24-year-old also revealed that his former Spain Under-21 team-mates David De Gea and Juan Mata are thrilled to have Herrera at Old Trafford.

“I know that they are very happy. I was talking with them and they told me that this is the biggest club in the world and we have a very good squad,” Herrera continued.
