Ander Herrera the real deal, says former Man United defender
Former Manchester United defender David May hails Ander Herrara as a "top-class midfielder" after the Spaniard's £29m move
David May is confident that Ander Herrera will prove to be the “real deal” after the Spanish midfielder completed his move to Manchester United on Thursday.
The 24-year-old has signed a four-year deal with the 20-time English champions, becoming the first signing of the Louis van Gaal era at Old Trafford.
Well, we certainly needed a midfielder and somebody of his quality will definitely be an asset
And former United centre-half May, who was part of Sir Alex Ferguson’s treble-winning squad in 1999, welcomed the arrival of a “top-class midfielder”.
“We have been crying out for a top-class midfielder and, when I have watched him, he has been the real deal,” May told United’s website.
“He is the perfect age as well at 24. It will help to have David De Gea and Juan Mata here, I am sure they have already spoken to him about what the club is all about and how big it is, the fans and their passion.
“He’ll be a fantastic addition.”
Former Republic of Ireland international and United star Kevin Moran added that Herrera will be a much-needed presence in midfield.
“Well, we certainly needed a midfielder and somebody of his quality will definitely be an asset. People around Old Trafford might not know too much about him but, by all accounts, he has the pedigree that is needed,” Moran added.
“I hope it is the first of a few signings. I certainly think it is needed and he is at the right age. He has got the legs that we need in midfield.”
