John Brooks headed in a dramatic winner for USA in a pulsating final 10 minutes to help his side beat Ghana 2-1 in their opening Group G game.

Andre Ayew’s 82nd-minute strike appeared to have salvaged a point for Ghana after former Fulham midfielder Clint Dempsey had given Jurgen Kinsmann’s side the lead inside 29 seconds – but Brooks headed in from a corner to seal three big points.

It isn’t often Mario Balotelli and US president Barack Obama tweet about the same things, so here is a very special edition of Short and Tweet, with posts from some big-name sport stars in chronological order.

Italy striker Mario Balotelli (@FinallyMario) cheers on his Milan team-mates: “Come on Ghana!!!! Come on!!! @MichaelEssien @MuntariOfficial”

Out-of-favour Giuseppe Rossi (@GiuseppeRossi22) wishes USA striker Jozy Altidore a swift recovery after his injury blow: “Hoping it’s not serious for Jozy @JozyAltidore”

Former Chelsea defender Mario Melchiot (@MarioMelchiot) hails Dempsey’s super quick strike: “Hopes go up for #USsoccer, if even #EllenDegeneres starts talking about it! #clintdempsey with #WorldCup’s 5th fastest #goal ever! #mmlove”

However, Ghana strike late as USA finally falter, or as Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) says: “Bus broke down!”

But it is soon up and running again, prompting tennis legend Serena Williams (@serenawilliams) to tweet: “Yessssssssssssssssssssssssssssss”

Former Dutch midfielder George Boateng (@george1boateng) is unhappy his namesake didn’t feature: “Why @KPBofficial didn’t start against the #USA i do not understand! By far the best player when he came on. Such a bad game by #Ghana”

Ex-Everton defender Kevin Kilbane (@kdkilbane77) congratulates his old team-mate: “Well done @TimHowardGK and #USA great result tonight. Think they’ll go well. #FifaWorldCup”

Finally, Miami Heat star LeBron James(@KingJames) is watching the soccer to forget about his franchise’s Finals loss: “Congrats USMST! Great start at the World Cup”
