Brazil

Julio Cesar Magnificent stop to deny Aránguiz just after the hour mark. Safe hands. Beaten all ends up by Pinilla’s thunderbolt late on in extra time. Stood up well in the penalty shoot-out. 9/10

Dani Alves Fantastic shot goal-wards on 42 minutes to test Bravo in the Chilean goal. A threat going forward but conceded a laboured silly foul and cautioned accordingly in extra-time. 7

strong>Marcelo Caught napping for Chile’s equaliser. Provided attacking outlet with freedom in the first half in particular. 7

Luiz Gustavo Picked up a booking that rules him out of next game. Solid presence anchoring the midfield to release more attack-minded players like Oscar, Hulk and Neymar. 7

Thiago Silva Brazil’s rock at the back, timely in the challenge, didn’t let any Chilean past him. 9

David Luiz Not sure how much he knew about the opening strike, but won’t mind how his first international goal found the net. A performance full of passion and heart. 8

Hulk Gifted the ball to Chile for Sanchez to slot home the equaliser. Thought he’d made amends by scoring his first goal for Brazil at a major tournament until it was ruled out for handball and given a yellow card as a result. Full of endeavour in the final third, often supported in key attacking areas. 7

Fernandinho Solid in midfield for country mirroring his club form. Substituted due to injury. 7

Fred One thing you can say about Fred this tournament is he’s consistent. Immobile, lacklustre. 4

Oscar Nice touches, and magician like guile to thread a pass and start another Brazilian attack. Workmanlike. 8

Neymar Full of purposeful running and attacking threat in the first half, went missing in the second to Chile’s credit. Despatched the decisive penalty in the shootout under immense pressure. 8

Substitutes:

Ramires Confident in possession, positive. 7

Willian N/A

Isolated and marshalled well by the Chilean defence. 5

Chile

Claudio Bravo (man of the match) Time after time, the Chilean number one denied Brazil. Fantastic positioning and shot-stopping throughout. Showcased why Barcelona signed the 31-year-old from Real Sociedad as Victor Valdes’ heir apparent. 9

Mauricio Isla Cool, calm and composed on the ball, worked tirelessly. 8

Eugenio Mena Booked. Would have missed the next match. Provided support in wide areas and defensively sound. 7

Gonzalo Jara Never stopped working to cope with the Brazilian frontline who played at real pace and intensity at times. 8

Gary Medel ‘The pitbull’ as he is nicknamed was solid again at the back for Chile. Sensational presence. Distaught after injury forced his withdrawal in extra time. 9

Francisco Silva Like Mena, would have missed the next match after receiving yellow card. Gave everything for his team. 7

Charles Aránguiz Great link-up play with Sanchez, nearly scored just before half time. Never stopped running. Constant threat. 9

Marcelo Díaz Defensively disciplined to help keep Neymar at bay in the second half for long periods. Full of attacking endeavour going forward. 8

Arturo Vidal Bossed the Chilean midfield. 8

Alexis Sánchez Took his goal with ease to net 10th goal in last 14 internationals. Dangerous for 90 minutes and beyond. 9

Eduardo Vargas Built a good relationship with Sanchez up top for Chile, asked plenty of questions of the Brazilian back line. 7

Substitutes:

Mauricio Pinilla Provided a different outlet offensively, height and presence to give the likes of Luiz food for thought. Hit an absolute rocket against the Brazilian bar in the dying embers of extra time – on another day, the net bulges and Brazil exit their own World Cup. 8

Jose Rojas N/A

Felipe Gutierrez Closed down the opposition well to keep the Brazilians at bay. 7
