New Zealand scraped past a weakened England side 20-15 at their Eden Park fortress in the first Test on Saturday morning.

Leicester Tigers-bound Freddie Burns kicked 12 points for England with Cipriani kicking a final penalty as England impressed.

Aaron Cruden kicked five penalties for the All Blacks before a late Conrad Smith try sealed victory with England win Marland Yarde in the sin bin.

Former England players, and New Zealand legend Dan Carter, took to Twitter to give their views on the thrilling first Test at Eden Park.

Former England centre Mike Tindall (@miketindall13) offers some love for his former Gloucester team-mates: “Massive congrats to @FreddieBurns @Ben_J_Morgan8 thought you boys were outstanding … What a fantastic effort by all 23 involved for @EnglandRugby they have to go and win next week”

All Blacks star Dan Carter (@DanCarter) concedes that the Steinlager Series won’t be the walkover some fans and pundits predicted: “So stoked we got the win tonight. Going to be a great series as the England boys are here to play! #Allblackeverything #lovetestfooty”

Ex-Sale Sharks and England full-back Jason Robinson (@Jason15Robinson) thinks New Zealand have been at the Monopoly again: “Wow, what a test match! @EnglandRugby can be very proud of their performance. Sin binning didn’t help. NZ used their get out of jail card”

Former England centre turned Sky Sports pundit Will Greenwood (@WillGreenwood) takes a break from arguing with Sir Clive Woodward to give his verdict: “Great great Test Match.. #AllBlacks take a chance at death again… @englandrugby brilliant…”

Red Rose legend Will Carling (@WillCarling) sees the positives in defeat: “Some big pluses for England today. V frustrating to lose, but Burns, Launchbury, Webber, Robshaw. Plenty to give confidence for next week”

Former England scrum-half turned BT Sport rugby pundit/fashion criminal Matt Dawson (@matt9dawson) believes England are building momentum: “What a performance!! Marker down for tests 2 & 3. #momentumbuilder”

Former Bath and England prop David Flatman (@davidflatman) thinks England head coach Stuart Lancaster has some serious selection headaches ahead: “I think Lancaster will struggle to drop Webber/Eastmond/Morgan/Hask/Burns/Cips, no matter who’s available.”
