Costa Rica

Keylor Navas Had little to do in the first half. Good save at the feet of Sturridge at the start of the second half. 7/10

Cristian Gamboa Good going forward and had to contend with opposite number Shaw marauding down his wing. 7

Oscar Duarte A solid performance from the Costa Rica centre-half. 6

Giancarlo Gonzalez Booked for a cynical challenge on Everton youngster Barkley. Otherwise, Gonzalez looked relatively comfortable. 6

Roy Miller Penalised for a couple of early mistimed challenges on Sturridge. Just as poor distributing the ball from the back. Compounded a merciless display by standing on Lampard’s ankle. 5

Junior Diaz Tireless in midfield and helped Costa Rica keep England’s trio of Barkley, Lallana and Wilshere largely at bay. 6

Bryan Ruiz The former Fulham was happy to collect the ball in midfield before lifting his head and trying to create an opening. Ruiz was less influential than in previous games. 5

Celso Borges Superb free-kick which required a vital tip over the crossbar. Looked to unsettle England’s slight midfielders. 6

Yeltsin Tejeda Didn’t have much of an impact on the Group D clash aside from being penalised for a couple of mistimed tackles. 5

Randall Brenes Found himself free in Foster’s area thanks to a long ball but wanted too many touches and his opportunity evaporated.6

Joel Campbell Early strike was blocked, otherwise Foster looked in trouble. Otherwise the Arsenal striker was disappointing. 5

Substitutes

Christian Bolanos Long-range strike drew a save from Foster. 5

England

Ben Foster Was forced into a full-stretch save to deny Borges. Down low to stop an ambitious Bolanos attempt, too. 7

Phil Jones Harshly penalised for a high challenge but typified the commitment that England fans want the players to show. 6

Chris Smalling Started well up against in-form Campbell. An assured performance from the Manchester United defender – could this be his best position? 7

Gary Cahill The Chelsea defender was disappointing in his distribution. Cahill didn’t have too much to do as Smalling kept Campbell well-marshalled. 6

Luke Shaw On his first World Cup start, Shaw was exciting going forward with his turn of acceleration. However, the Southampton defender was hesitant in the first half in terms of the defensive side of his game, but improved after half-time. 6

Frank Lampard Replaced captain Steven Gerrard and had his pocket picked in the opening 10 minutes – an ominous start. The Chelsea midfielder performed well in what could be his last England appearance. 7

Jack Wilshere Clattered by an early Costa Rica challenge but recovered well to create a chance for Sturridge with a quick turn of pace. Brilliantly-weighted pass to tee up Sturridge midway through the second half, Liverpool man should have done better. 8

James Milner Good pass to almost set Sturridge free. The Manchester City midfielder was solid on the right but didn’t offer to much creativity. 6

Ross Barkley Was energetic but didn’t have a huge impact in the first half until the 42nd minute. Combined with Wilshere and Sturridge but rushed his eventual finish. Good second-half run but no end product. 6

Adam Lallana Nervy start for the Southampton striker. Grew into the game and offered a different option. Booked for a late challenge on Ruiz. Overall, a positive performance. 6

Daniel Sturridge The Liverpool striker had an early chance to score his second World Cup goal but his left-footed strike went narrowly wide. Sturridge didn’t have much better luck in front of goal after the interval as he was denied by the Costa Rica goalkeeper before missing England’s best chance of the Group D clash. 6
