Ferdinand, Schurrle & more: Twitter reacts as Brazil beat Chile

Rio Ferdinand and Andre Schürrle tweet their thoughts after Brazil beat Chile 3-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes

Brazil booked their place in the World Cup quarter-final thanks to a dramatic 3-2 penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes.

Julio Cesar denied Mauricio Pinilla and Alexis Sanchez before free agent Gonzalo Jara hit the woodwork with Chile’s fifth penalty after the Barcelona forward had cancelled out David Luiz’s first-half strike.

The match saw the highest tweets per minute that Twitter has ever tracked during an event, setting a new record for total updates with 16.4 million tweets, making it the most-discussed game of the #WorldCup so far.

The moment that Gonzalo Jara missed the last penalty generated 389,000 tweets per minute, eclipsing Superbowl 48, where the peak was 382,000.
