Lineker, Collymore & more: Twitter reacts to ban for Liverpool’s Suarez
Gary Lineker and Stan Collymore both tweet their thoughts as Luis Suárez is banned from football for four months by Fifa
Luis Suarez has been suspended from all football-related activity for four months for biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini.
The Uruguay striker has also been banned for nine international matches after being found guilty of misconduct during his country’s 1-0 win over Italy on Tuesday.
The suspension means that the 27-year-old Liverpool striker will miss the first nine games of the new Premier League season.
News of the hefty punishment has inevitably prompted plenty of activity on Twitter – and here is some of the best of the initial reaction.
England legend Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) breaks the news: “Suarez is banned from all football activities for 4 months. And 9 international matches.”
Former midfielder Don Hutchison (@donhutch4) feels sorry for Suarez’s club: “Am I right in hearing Suarez will be banned for Liverpool as well? If so what a JOKE!!!! Liverpool lawyers will fight this.”
Former Stoke defender Danny Higginbotham (@Higginbotham05) feels that a transfer could be on the cards for the controversial forward: “Now the ban has come out one thing I will say is that if he wants to move this will be the easiest time for him I think. Will be interesting to see if he can moving during the ban or not. Also interesting that the two most recent biting incidents have come at a time when he was considering his future. Coincidence or more to it.”
Ex-left-back Michael Gray (@mickygray33) feels that the punishment is not severe enough: “Surely the ban for Suarez had to be a minimum of a year and a much bigger fine…!!! I’m amazed that he wants to appeal it.. #mental”
Sky Sports pundit Chris Kamara (@chris_kammy) can’t help a pun: “Just seen all the Suarez stuff on twitter so no point me adding to it! Anyway its time to go out for a bite to eat lol”
Midfielder Jody Morris (@morriskid) also feels sorry for the Reds: “Think it’s harsh on Liverpool if I’m honest…but I suppose it’s the risk you take sticking by him..if he was pants they wouldn’t have!!”
Celebrity Arsenal fan Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) reckons that Suarez will be OK with the punishment: “A gentle nibble for Suarez – he’ll be back playing again by end of October. And can pay the fine from 4 days wages.”
And finally, former Liverpool man Stan Collymore (@StanCollymore) updates his followers: “Luis Suarez CAN be transferred during the ban period. #LFC will wait until they see disciplinary report from FIFA before making any comment.”
