Ghana 1 USA 2: Player ratings as John Brooks headed in a late winner for the Americans

By Will Turner

Larsen Kwarasey There were a few that felt he should have done better with the opener but there were bigger concerns over both his distribution and handling, flapping at crosses throughout. 4/10

Daniel Opare Was busy throughout at right-back and was a threat going forward during the first half. 6

Kwadwo Asamoah Worked tirelessly up and down the left wing and defended solidly. He also caused problems in attack. 6

Mohammed Rabiu Was relatively untroubled throughout but showed his frustrations receiving a yellow card. 6

Jonathan Mensah Gave away the corner which America grabbed their winner from. 5

John Boye At fault for both goals. Firstly caught cold in the opening seconds allowing Dempsey to pass him and score before being beaten to the ball by Brooks with just minutes to go. 4

Christian Atsu Was largely Ghana’s most dangerous player, running with pace at the American defence. But was too heavily relied on and his decision-making was questionable. 6

Sulley Muntari Capped a frustrating first half with a rash challenge on Jermaine Jones, improved in the second half and went close with a powerful left footed strike. 6

Asamoah Gyan Produced a fine flick to set up the equaliser but missed two good chances that he should have scored. 5

Jordan Ayew Came off early in the second half after a frustrating and disappointing first half in which most of his team’s front men struggled. 5

Andre Ayew Took his goal with confidence but should have levelled for his side far earlier and missed good chances. 6

Kevin-Prince Boateng showed his flair and creativity and gave Ghana a boost. 6

Tim Howard Claimed crosses and dealt with through balls with authority and saved well from Gyan in the second half. 6

DaMarcus Beasley Put in a solid display and covered a lot of ground, struggled to contain Atsu. 6

Fabian Johnson Made a number of good runs down the flank but wasn’t utilised or found as often as he would have liked. 6

Jermaine Jones A typically industrious display from the midfielder who did not stop running for his team. 6

Geoff Cameron (Man of the Match) Made one goal-saving block and was a real rock in the heart of the American defence. 7

Matt Besler The centre-half defended solidly alongside Cameron, dealing well with Gyan and the many crosses pumped in by Christian Atsu before being substituted with a suspected injury. 6

Kyle Beckerman Was tidy in possession and cleared up lots of loose ends and scrapped hard. Went quiet when the going got tough in the second half. 6

Michael Bradley Worked well alongside Beckerman and Jones and covered every blade of grass, using the ball well throughout. 6

Jozy Altidore The target man lasted just 20 minutes before being stretchered off with a hamstring injury but still had time to show why he largely frustrated at Sunderland last season, squandering a good opening early on. 5

Clint Dempsey Took his opening goal superbly after beating Boye but had a relatively quiet game after his opener. 6

Alejandro Bedoya Put in a disciplined performance and looked eager to impress in the role previously occupied by Landon Donovan. 6

Aron Johannsson Ran hard but ultimately failed to sufficiently replace Altidore’s physical presence. 5

John Brooks Defended with confidence on his World Cup debut and climbed well to score the vital winner. 7

Graham Zusi Entered for Bedoya with ten minutes to go. N/A
