Hodgson ridiculous to say Suarez isn’t world class, says Liverpool legend
Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler believes Roy Hodgson's criticism of Luis Suárez only wound up the Uruguay striker
Robbie Fowler believes Roy Hodgson was “ridiculous” to claim Luis Suarez is not world class after the Liverpool striker fired Uruguay to a 2-1 victory over England.
The Three Lions manager suggested that Suarez could not be considered a truly world-class player until the 27-year-old forward performs at a major tournament.
Suarez restored Uruguay’s advantage with a powerful finish past Joe Hart after Wayne Rooney cancelled out the Liverpool striker’s first-half effort.
And Liverpool legend Fowler, who scored 183 goals in all competitions, criticised the England manager for his pre-match remarks about Suarez.
“Luis Suarez is a great player,” Fowler told TalkSport. “Roy Hodgson’s criticism will have driven him on. It was ridiculous for him to say Suarez is not world class. There was no need to say that.
“Have Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo performed at a World Cup? No, they haven’t. They are still world class though.
“It was a ridiculous and that statement will have driven him, and the whole Uruguay team, on.”
