Jan Vertonghen lifts lid on phone call with new Tottenham manager
Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen is very impressed with new manager Mauricio Pochettino
Jan Vertonghen has talked up Mauricio Pochettino after the new Tottenham manager took time to call the Belgium international.
The north London club appointed Pochettino as their new manager last month after chairman Daniel Levy sacked Tim Sherwood following a sixth-place finish in May.
I was very impressed by Southampton in the last two years, from their style of play and the manager
Vertonghen is one of a number of Spurs players who have been linked with a potential move away from White Hart Lane after the club’s failure to secure Champions League football.
But the Belgium defender, who helped his country finish top of Group H on Thursday night, thanked the new Spurs manager for taking the time to contact the former Ajax man.
“I take this opportunity to thank him for the phone call that he made to me, telling me to focus solely on the World Cup at the moment,” Vertonghen said.
The 27-year-old, who joined Spurs from Ajax in 2012, is looking forward to working with Pochettino after watching the South American’s impact at former club Southampton.
“I was very impressed by Southampton in the last two years, from their style of play and the manager,” Vertonghen added. “I think it’s a great appointment for Tottenham.”
