Jose Mourinho sticks up for Arsenal star Mesut Ozil
Jose Mourinho leaps to the defence of Mesut Özil after the recent criticism of the Arsenal playmaker
Jose Mourinho has launched a staunch defence of Mesut Ozil following the recent criticism of the Arsenal playmaker.
The 25-year-old has been under the spotlight in recent weeks after the Germany international failed to find consistent form for the Gunners in the second half of the season.
He’s a very sensitive boy. He needs the confidence of the others
Ozil initially impressed after his £42.5m move to Emirates Stadium from Real Madrid last summer but a hamstring injury coincided with a dip in form after the turn of the year.
However, Mourinho, who coached Ozil during his three years in charge at Real Madrid, says that the midfielder needs more encouragement from the Gunners.
“I cannot understand the criticism, it’s not justified,” Ozil told Yahoo.
“Ozil is Ozil. He is not the emotional leader of that team and doesn’t sweep everyone aside with his on the field aggression.
“No, this is not Mesut. Özil is someone who makes you smile when he’s on the ball. He is always ready and makes good passes, his balls are always accurate and properly timed.
“Mesut I know well from our time together at Real Madrid. He’s a very sensitive boy. He needs the confidence of the others. The need to believe in him.”
