Liverpool transfers: Mark Lawrenson urges the Reds to sell Luis Suárez after his latest biting controversy

Mark Lawrenson has urged Liverpool to sell Luis Suarez after the controversial striker appeared to bite Giorgio Chiellini.

The incident occurred during Uruguay’s 1-0 victory over Italy in World Cup Group D on Tuesday, with Suarez facing a possible 24-match ban if found guilty of the offence by Fifa.

And former Liverpool defender Lawrenson feels Suarez should be sold after the Reds striker bit Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic in April 2013, resulting in a 10-game FA suspension.

Liverpool may want to consider that as a bargaining tool when, as they surely will, Real Madrid and Barcelona come calling

“I’d be very surprised if Suarez is still at Anfield come the start of the season. They just cannot trust him,” Lawrenson wrote in his Liverpool Echo column.

“Liverpool stood by Suarez after the Branislav Ivanovic bite scandal and got their rewards. But it’s more than likely the forward will do the same to somebody else somewhere along the line.

“No matter how well Suarez plays, how many goals he scores, how many assists he has, it’s going to come at a price.

“It was eight games for his bite in Holland. Ten for Ivanovic. How many will it be next time? Half a season? He’s no use to anyone when suspended for that many games, especially at more than £150,000 a week.

“Liverpool can no longer run the risk of that happening while Suarez is their player.”

He added: “Liverpool may want to consider that as a bargaining tool when, as they surely will, Real Madrid and Barcelona come calling.

“I can see Liverpool doing a deal, certainly if they can swap players as part of the transfer.”
